Technologies of the Self (2020)
Co-published with Marc Selwyn Fine Art on the occasion of the eponynous exhibition with works by Max Hooper Schneider, Tetsumi Kudo, Lucas Samaras and Paul Thek and curated by Jay Ezra Nayssan, this book explores how these artists use the concept of the container as a tool for understanding and transforming the self.
Technologies of the Self is meant to perform as a box that opens and closes upon itself. The book is riddled with dualities - inside and out, left and right, text and image, alluding to the containment-transformation duality which is at the heart of the exhibition.
The “left” book includes a preface and introduction by the exhibition's curator Jay Ezra Nayssan, and four critical essays on each of the four artists in the exhibition written by Johannes Hoerning, lead researcher for the Marcel Duchamp Collection and Archive of Hong Kong’s M+ Museum and PhD candidate at Cambridge University.
The “right” book includes over 100 pages of images and texts by Max Hooper Schneider, Tetsumi Kudo, Lucas Samaras, and Paul Thek which have been collected from over 50 sources including museums, galleries, catalogs and publications in order to highlight the similarities (and dissimilarities) between the four artists.
